IBM WebSphere
Software Platform
What is WebSphere?
WebSphere is a software platform that
enables all departments to extend business processes to the web, to grow as
a business and to differentiate from competitors by allowing a high degree
of customization in developing electronic business fronts. The focus is on
speed to market, solving E-business skills problems and being able to change
quickly in response to the market.
The WebSphere software platform has
three main components: Foundation, Foundation Services and Application
Services. Foundation consists of web application servers and transaction
servers. Foundation Services consists of development, website and IT
services. Application Services consists of collaboration, e-commerce and B2B
functions. A fourth component, Partner Applications, involves partnerships
with companies in the E-business arena.

Foundation

Foundation Services
Enables companies to
extend existing IT systems and create a consistent computing environment.
Foundation Services consists of Development Services, Website Services,

- Development Services - Provides Rapid Application Development
(RAD)
technologies, including WebSphere Studio, VisualAge Tools and
E-Components. Provides wizards and templates to facilitate development
without requiring in-depth development expertise
- Website Services - Enables Web Development, customization and analysis
tools, including XML server tools such as XML parser, Voice XML for Direct
Talk. WebSphere Everyplace Suite allows interface with wireless and
hand-held technologies
- IT Services - Provides management, data and integration support
and includes WebSphere Performance Pack and MQSeries Integrator
Partner Services
The fourth component of WebSphere software platform,
Partner Applications, helps to differentiate an e-business to lead in the
marketplace. IBM has more than 20 000 business partners to help customize
E-business processes.
