IBM WebSphere Software Platform

What is WebSphere?
WebSphere is a software platform that enables all departments to extend business processes to the web, to grow as a business and to differentiate from competitors by allowing a high degree of customization in developing electronic business fronts. The focus is on speed to market, solving E-business skills problems and being able to change quickly in response to the market.

The WebSphere software platform has three main components: Foundation, Foundation Services and Application Services. Foundation consists of web application servers and transaction servers. Foundation Services consists of development, website and IT services. Application Services consists of collaboration, e-commerce and B2B functions. A fourth component, Partner Applications, involves partnerships with companies in the E-business arena.

What does it do? Features and Benefits
Modular implementation enables companies to build on existing business processes and to "Webify" processes without disrupting them, at the same time providing security, reliability and scalability. MQSeries, supporting 35 platforms, supports commercial transactions.

Foundation

Foundation Services
Enables companies to extend existing IT systems and create a consistent computing environment. Foundation Services consists of Development Services, Website Services, and IT Services.

  1. Development Services - Provides Rapid Application Development (RAD) technologies, including WebSphere Studio, VisualAge Tools and E-Components. Provides wizards and templates to facilitate development without requiring in-depth development expertise
  2. Website Services - Enables Web Development, customization and analysis tools, including XML server tools such as XML parser, Voice XML for Direct Talk. WebSphere Everyplace Suite allows interface with wireless and hand-held technologies
  3. IT Services - Provides management, data and integration support and includes WebSphere Performance Pack and MQSeries Integrator

Partner Services
The fourth component of WebSphere software platform, Partner Applications, helps to differentiate an e-business to lead in the marketplace. IBM has more than 20 000 business partners to help customize E-business processes.

What devices does it support?
WebSphere interfaces with all web-enabled technologies. Part of Website Services, WebSphere Everyplace Suite delivers PC-based applications to devices such as wireless handsets.

Who are the clients?
WebSphere is an award winning software solution. Clients of IBM Websphere include brick and mortar companies like Mazda and JP Morgan and web-based companies such as Liquidprice.com. Other clients include American Express, Vodafone and MCI Worldcom.
