Sony Ericsson Announces M2M Power Business Solution For Development of Cost-Effective Machine-to-Machine Applications

Sony Ericsson today announced the launch of M2mpower Business Solution, a powerful support environment designed to facilitate the development of cost-effective wireless machine-to-machine (M2M) applications. M2mpower enables developers to easily develop and embed wireless applications directly onto compatible Sony Ericsson M2M products, using specifically designed developers' tools.

M2mpower is introduced with the new GR47 and GR48 programmable radio devices for GSM/GPRS applications. The M2mpower Business Solution, together with the GR47 and GR48, will be available from Q2 and Q3 respectively.

The M2mpower package provides everything required to get wireless M2M applications fast to market. The package includes a radio device, either the GR47 or GR48, together with software development tools including application function libraries and reference applications. The scripting language is based on the industry standard ANSI C language, allowing developers with existing applications to make a smooth transition to M2mpower. The hardware developer's kit contains the hardware elements required to become operational, such as a power supply, SIM holder and antenna. In addition, the M2mpower package provides comprehensive training and support.

M2mpower provides an opportunity to streamline development, shorten time to market and reduce overall costs. M2mpower is targeted at system integrators requiring easy migration between products, and application developers in vertical segments, focusing on telemetry and telematics applications.

Customer trials are already underway with selected companies in the EMEA region. A number of applications have already been successfully embedded onto the GR47 using M2mpower. For example CeTEC in Germany is using M2mpower successfully for operating its GSM telematics and telemetry systems. The company is also using it in its industrial M2M applications for monitoring and control, GSM tracking applications and for customized GSM hardware and software development.

In Sweden, Wireless Device is using M2mpower as a plug-in solution to connect wireless meter reading. The application is a cost effective way to connect energy meters to the billing systems in power supply companies. In Spain, Taxitronic is using M2mpower to provide positioning solutions for taxi fleets. The system is built in to each taxi and tracks the vehicle's exact location as well as making it possible to assign new services to the taxi driver.

The new GR47 and GR48 programmable radio devices offer an impressive specification. The devices include an intrinsic TCP/IP stack to make the most effective use of GPRS. The embedded controller is made available for hosting the customer application, reducing the need for an external controller in areas such as alarm, meter reading and vending applications. The devices are operational across a wide temperature range. They are configurable, to enable optimum usage of the extensive input/output pins provided, making it easy to adapt to existing M2M solutions. Both devices will be type approved with the GR47 supporting dual band 900MHz/1800MHz and the GR48 supporting 850MHz/1900MHz - both versions are able to send and receive data by GPRS, HSCSD, CSD and SMS as well as handle voice calls. The GR47 and GR48 have the same form factor and footprint as the GM47 and GM48.

Future initiatives will include expanding and enhancing M2mpower Business Solution to support other devices in the M2M product portfolio, and further by introducing new elements to the service and support offering. Anders Franzén, Corporate Vice President for M2M at Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications, says: "M2mpower focuses on the needs of the M2M market as a whole. We are aware that our customers need a competitive solution that helps to both simplify and accelerate application development, a solution that is specifically designed for the wireless M2M industry, and with M2mpower, we have exactly that. Our solution is powerful, cost effective and affordable"

MobileInfo Comments and Advisory: Machine to Machine (M2M) communication is a very good effort to lower the cost of embedding simple monitoring solutions in smart phones, whether it is for communicating location information or for sending telemetry information or for controlling vending machines. One solution does not fit all. In the past, many of these applications had to rely on more-expensive and more complex solutions. Now, smart-phone based solutions for these applications based on M2M offering from Sony-Ericsson will serve the needs of smaller businesses for faster implementation of these applications.
