Mobile Phones Sales Soar & Verizon Predicts Sunny Outlook For wireless Data

1. Mobile Phone Sales Soar in First Quarter
The worldwide market for handsets grew in the first quarter of 2003, reflecting broad consumer interest in voice-enabled mobile devices. According to IDC's Worldwide Handset QView, worldwide handset shipments grew by 16.6 percent in the first quarter to 107.6 million units, compared with 92 million units shipped in the year ago period. Nokia maintained its top position in the market while LG Electronics replaced Sony Ericsson in the top five. Nokia ended the first quarter with a 35.5 percent market share, followed by Motorola with 15.5 percent; Samsung with 12.3 percent; Siemens with 7.4 percent, and LG with 5.2 percent. "The evolution of color displays, digital imaging, and converged hand-held devices continues to drive growth in the worldwide handset market," said Ross Sealfon, research analyst in IDC's Smart Handheld Devices program. "Despite continued economic uncertainty, a strong first quarter supported by new technologies and form factors indicates healthy industry growth during 2003." In the first quarter of 2003, the worldwide market for converged hand-held devices grew 438.3 percent year-over-year to 1.76 million units. (Source: AP) - more info

2. Verizon Wireless Predicts Sunny Outlook for Its Wireless Data Services
Based on the first six months after its national rollout of its "Get It Now" services, Verizon Wireless said the outlook for wireless data looks promising. In the six-month period, consumers have downloaded 8.5 million games, ring tones, entertainment applications and other offerings. In the first quarter of 2003, Verizon Wireless customers downloaded an average of nearly two million applications each month. The six Get It Now-enabled handsets currently available constituted more than 40 percent of all handsets sold through Verizon Wireless' direct distribution channels in the first quarter of 2003. By the close of 2002, Verizon Wireless had sold more than 1.5 million Get It Now handsets, and through March 2003 that number has more than doubled, to 3.2 million Get It Now-capable handsets in the marketplace. The company expects to sell more than 8 million Get It Now-enabled handsets by the end of 2003. "QUALCOMM's BREW technology, great color offerings from handset manufacturers and incredible applications from the developer community have allowed us to build the most robust and customer-friendly downloadable entertainment service in the nation. And we have plans for using BREW technology to provide suites of services for business users in the near future. Verizon Wireless will reach out to all segments of our customer base -- individual users, mobile professionals, medium and large-sized enterprises, with wireless data offerings running through BREW," said John Stratton, vice president and chief marketing officer at Verizon Wireless.
