SYWARE Announces mEnable™, New Wireless Architecture for Real-Time Access to Enterprise Data -
Software allows Visual Basic and C++ developers to instantly become wireless developers
Cambridge, MA (February 26, 2001). SYWARE, Inc., a leading developer of intuitive database tools for business and personal productivity, today introduced mEnable™, a new wireless software architecture that allows mobile users to access and modify server data in real time. mEnable allows enterprises and integrators to quickly develop or extend data-driven applications with interactive, wireless access to corporate data, providing major benefits for a variety of mobile computing applications, including inventory management, patient tracking, and sales force automation.
The mEnable architecture allows any application written in C++ or Visual Basic to wirelessly read from or write to any ODBC-enabled data source, such as Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle, Microsoft Access, and Sybase. Using the TCP/IP protocol, mEnable seamlessly communicates over LAN, WAN, or Internet connections, whether wireless or wired. With mEnable, synchronization is no longer required to access server data. The end result is more complete and timely information for the mobile professional.
"Wirelessly connected Windows-powered mobile devices are extending the reach of enterprise data to mobile professionals," said Rogers Weed, General Manager of the Mobile Devices Division at Microsoft Corp. "With mEnable, wireless users have access to the same resources as their wired counterparts. SYWARE's mEnable provides enterprise software developers with a valuable tool for meeting the needs of the increasingly mobile work force."
"mEnable allows every Visual Basic or C++ developer to instantly become a wireless developer," said Sy Danberg, President of SYWARE. "The mEnable architecture is a breakthrough technology that solves data access problems for application developers and end users alike. It is an essential component of the wireless computing revolution, one that will help free mobile workers from their network bonds."
TCP/IP and Bluetooth
mEnable can be used over a LAN, WAN, or the Internet. The software communicates between the mobile device and the server using the TCP/IP protocol through standard network adapter cards for wireless communications that install into mobile devices. Support for TCP/IP also allows mEnable to work with the new Bluetooth protocol for short-range wireless communication, enabling users to operate a handheld data device while a cell phone provides the long-range connection.
mEnable solves major synchronization problems for users who have traditionally had to rely on local data that had been previously downloaded and was no longer current. In contrast, mEnable provides handheld and laptop users with full interactive access to corporate databases, eliminating synchronization tasks and "islands of data" that occur when data is stored on the mobile device. All users, both mobile and fixed, work from a consistent up-to-date data source, ensuring that everyone is "on the same page."
mEnable runs on any Windows-powered mobile device, including Pocket PCs and all devices running Windows CE, Windows 9x, Windows 2000, or Windows NT. This allows support for the full spectrum of mobile PCs, from palm-size and handheld units to laptops and sub-laptops. This flexibility enables data to be presented in the format appropriate for different devices, while allowing all users to share the same data source. This ability to mix and match devices is also an advantage for companies that are planning a transition from laptops to handheld units.
A good example of mEnable at work can be seen in warehouse management. As orders are placed, a sales automation program running on the server generates lists of items that need to be picked for shipment. The data in these pick lists is available through a handheld application that presents the data in a format that is meaningful for the warehouse worker. As the warehouse worker finishes picking each order, he marks the order as complete and it is processed for shipment. The inventory is automatically deducted on the server application, allowing front-office sales personnel to know exactly what is in inventory in real time.
Availability and Pricing
mEnable is available for immediate purchase. The mEnable SDK packaged with 10 run-time licenses is priced at $499. The mEnable SDK packaged with 100 run-times is priced at $1999.
