Symbol completes First Phase of Wireless Voice Over IP Installation at Wholesale Retailer

Symbol Technologies, Inc. has completed the first phase rollout of its voice over IP technology at BJís Wholesale Club locations.  The retailer has been in need of streamlining its entire communication process from management to the customer all on one network.

The solution comprises of Symbolís NetVisionģ Phones accompanied with an upgrade of the original Symbol 900MHz wireless LAN to Symbolís Spectrum 24ģ, 2.4 GHz IEEE 802.11 standards-based wireless LAN.  By converging wireless data and voice over IP technologies, Symbol has provided BJís with a unified method of communication at each location.  All external calls can be forwarded by the storeís PBX line, and routed directly to the NetVision Phones, which captures voice for real-time communication. This technology increases productivity and saves associatesí time.  For immediate assistance, an external customer request can now be routed directly to an associate working in the department of the queried products. In addition Spectrum24 wireless network is compatible with original Symbol appliances in use, such as PDT 6840, a Symbol handheld computer used by the retailer for inventory, receiving, and price verification.

Mobileinfo Advisory and Comment:

Voice over IP on LAN infrastructure is a niche application. The real need is beyond the LAN.
